Seeing all the amazing 5G and IoT innovations here at MWC 2022, it can be easy to forget the comprehensive and widespread infrastructure that is necessary to power these applications. Virtually every edge application requires a strong network backbone and core data center products to connect to. Thanks to Supermicro’s wide range of servers, we can deliver performance both at the edge and back to the core or cloud data center.
In addition to the many compact and fanless edge devices, there are SuperBlade®, MicroBlade®, and Twin systems on display. Each of these systems is purpose-built to deliver high-performance, high-density performance for cloud, enterprise, and data center workloads. SuperBlade supports the latest generation of CPUs, GPUs, front I/O, redundant switches, redundant power supplies and cooling fans, optimized for telco, 5G MEC, CDN, AI/ML, HPC, and cloud applications. We also have the brand new GrandTwin® on display, a high flexibly front-accessible 2U chassis with up to 4 nodes, each supporting one single-processor, 16 DIMMs and flexible front I/O, optimized for Kubernetes, & distributed in-memory caching to extend hybrid cloud capabilities and accelerating cloud-native applications, by increasing network bandwidth and reducing the latency for content delivery networks. This new compact system enables operators to simplify the logistics and provisioning process for deploying high-efficiency cache clusters at strategic edge data center locations with existing top of rack switches to optimize performance & reduce the TCE.
To enable users to get the best performance and value out of these systems, Supermicro has developed a collection of management software solutions. At MWC, we are demonstrating SuperCloud Composer (SCC), a unified management platform that enables users to control their IT infrastructure through a single pane of glass. With automated device management, extensive monitoring and analytics, compatibility with Redfish open standards, and more, SCC helps businesses to streamline their operations and reduce the TCO of their data center. SCC can also be deployed to orchestrate a composable disaggregated infrastructure, delivering the benefits of software-defined infrastructure to the on-premises data center.
Another application that we are demonstrating at MWC is the rapid delivery of content to consumers using the latest content delivery network or CDN technologies. Over recent years, there has been an explosion of OTT streaming services, and demand for media entertainment is predicted to keep growing for some time to come. It is also moving into new areas such as augmented reality (AR) and virtual reality (VR), where integrated hybrid experiences will be enabled with the rollout of 5G cellular networks. Deploying an elastic CDN capacity at the edge can improve the QoS (Quality of Service), reduce network congestion, mitigate DDoS, and improve hardware utilization by using shared hardware for multiple applications.
Today, cloud-native applications are built to run on a microservices architecture, where the end-user experience is optimized through the rebuilding of application images, instead of modifying/repairing them in place. Supermicro is closely partnered with Red Hat to enable continuous integration & deployment of microservices, empowering digital transformation through a sustainable DevOps approach, reliable hybrid cloud infrastructure, and game changing performance with Enterprise-Ready Kubernetes building blocks, thanks to Red Hat OpenShift. Together with Intel, Supermicro is demonstrating the performance metrics of Supermicro equipment, featuring 3rd Gen Intel Xeon Scalable processors, running a CDN workload hosting of the infrastructure.
In addition to the demos at our own booth, our friends at Intel were also demonstrating CDN capabilities, showing a setup with a CloudDC, 2U Ultra, and BigTwin, which well exceeded the performance target to support more than 3,200 4K video streams with only 2 VMs. Learn more about the Intel demo here.
If you want to know more about our capabilities to drive performance from the edge to the cloud, come by our booth at MWC (Hall 5, booth #5D66), Intel Booth (Hall 3, booth #3E31), or feel free to reach out!
